Solar power could change energy consumption in Congo. - The Loudima family in Congo have long been without electricity but they have found an environmental solution: solar power. In the remote districts of Pointe Noire, the Congolese start-up Hélios Électricité has installed a solar power plant.
This solar project is the first of its kind in Africa, will include a 222 MWp solar PV system and a 123 MVA/526MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). The plant will provide a 30MW dispatchable renewable baseload energy supply to the mine, offsetting fuel generators and reducing carbon emissions by around 78,750 tonnes per year.
Auguy Bakome, Project Manager, Kamoa Copper, said, The solar project is a key milestone in delivering clean, reliable energy to Kamoa Copper. With advanced solar and battery systems, we're boosting energy resilience, cutting emissions, and advancing sustainable mining.
The mining complex is the largest of its kind in Africa, with an installed capacity of 600,000 tonnes of copper per annum, with a smelter under construction that will be commissioned this year. This solar project is the first of its kind in Africa, will include a 222 MWp solar PV system and a 123 MVA/526MWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
Building on these initial successes, the company has developed a pipeline of mini-grid projects in Eastern DRC. Proparco plans to co-invest with IFC in this opportunity, and has jointly led the ESG and Governance action plans, bringing much-needed risk capital to the round to fully finance the series B projects.
