According to the company, this puts it at 10 times the size of the largest battery currently operating in the UK. Indeed it will dwarf the UK's biggest active project so far, the 50MW / 75MWh Thurcroft battery storage site in South Yorkshire, which was recently acquired by stock exchange listed specialist fund Gresham House Energy Storage.
The UK's total battery storage project pipeline currently contains a total of 127GW of capacity. Figure 1 demonstrates the amount of capacity at each development stage as a proportion of the total pipeline. 8% of the capacity pipeline in the UK is operational or under construction, with 31% approved and yet to begin construction.
In northern Scotland, where wind generation often exceeds local demand, battery storage sites can store surplus electricity cheaply and sell it later when prices rise ('arbitrage'). Energy storage sites store the surplus energy and then earn revenues according to the difference between the wholesale price and offer price.
