This paper presents open-source, flexible, and easily-scalable models of grid following and grid forming inverters for the PSCAD software platform. The models are intended for system integration studies, particularly transient stability analyses of power systems with a high penetration of inverter-based generation.
The control design of this type of inverter may be challenging as several algorithms are required to run the inverter. This reference design uses the C2000 microcontroller (MCU) family of devices to implement control of a grid connected inverter with output current control.
As the penetration of inverter based resources (IBRs) into grids increases, grid forming inverters allow IBRs to contribute to the grid stability during normal operation as well as stay online to assist the grid in recovering from disturbances. Grid forming inverters also allow for greater use of IBRs in small, isolated grids or microgrids.

The inverter has the task of converting direct current into alternating current with a voltage of 220 Volts, making it suitable for feeding into the grid and for consumption.
