Supercapacitors 101: Introduction to
Welcome to Supercapacitors 101, a comprehensive blog series that explains the science, technology, and innovation behind supercapacitor
Unlike batteries, which store energy through chemical reactions, supercapacitors store energy electrostatically on the surface of electrodes. This enables them to charge and discharge rapidly, delivering high power density and enduring millions of charge-discharge cycles without significant degradation.
Supercapacitors have received wide attention as a new type of energy storage device between electrolytic capacitors and batteries . The performance improvement for supercapacitor is shown in Fig. 1 a graph termed as Ragone plot, where power density is measured along the vertical axis versus energy density on the horizontal axis.
Compared with electrolytic capacitors, supercapacitors has larger specific capacity and higher energy density. Compared with batteries, supercapacitors have higher power density (10–100 times higher than that of batteries) and longer life expectancy (millions of cycles). Fig. 1. Ragone Plot of electrical energy storage systems.
In order to store electrical charge, a supercapacitor uses porous materials as separators in order to store ions in those pores at an atomic level. The most commonly used material in modern supercapacitors is activated charcoal.
Supercapacitors are energy storage devices with very high capacity and a low internal resistance. In a supercapacitor, the electrical energy is stored in an electrolytic double-layer. Therefore such energy storage devices are generally called electrochemical double-layer capacitors (EDLC).
In addition to the high specific power the energy storage in supercapacitors is reversible in contrast to conventional batteries .The electronic applications need passive components to store the electrical energy in volume and weight as small as possible.
