Kazakhstan's new leadership, faced with concurrent challenges of volatile oil prices and the coronavirus pandemic, has approved nineteen new renewable energy projects worth $1.1 billion. This is the country's latest effort to go green and diversify its energy supply.

As Kazakhstan expands renewables, more investment will be needed in flexible capacity such as gas-fired and hydro power plants to accommodate the variability of solar and wind output, the report says.
Official energy statistics in Kazakhstan are the responsibility of the Committee on Statistics under the Ministry of National Economy. In 2016, the energy data collection system was modified as part of modernisation efforts by the Committee on Statistics.
The report recognises that energy prices are a significant social concern in Kazakhstan. A rise in prices for liquified gas used in vehicles contributed to the unrest that gripped the country in January 2022.
