Saudi Arabia commissions its largest battery energy storage system
Saudi Arabia has officially commissioned its largest battery energy storage system (BESS) to the grid, signifying a pivotal advancement in the nation''s renewable energy
Saudi Arabia's focus on BESS is not only a response to the country's energy needs but also a strategic move to position the kingdom as a leader in the global energy storage market.
The successful implementation of BESS projects will significantly contribute to Saudi Arabia's goal of increasing the share of renewable energy in its power mix, targeting 50% by 2030.
In addition to the product unveiling, Hithium also announced the formation of a new joint venture (JV), through which it plans the construction of a BESS factory in Saudi Arabia with 5GWh annual production capacity.
Through these projects, Saudi Arabia could help to set the standard for future energy storage solutions in the Middle East and beyond. The kingdom's move to invest heavily in energy storage is a response to both internal and external pressures to modernize and diversify its energy grid.
The project is among several large-scale battery storage initiatives being developed in Saudi Arabia. In an ongoing procurement, the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) is tendering four 500 MW / 2,000 MWh BESS projects.
The Bisha BESS is part of Saudi Arabia's broader initiative to strengthen its renewable energy infrastructure. This development aligns with Vision 2030, the kingdom's long-term economic strategy, which aims to derive 50% of its energy from renewable sources.
