Think of your RTK base station like an anchor. It sends corrections to your rover so your measurements are precise. But if that anchor isn't placed correctly, everything you measure will be off — sometimes by several feet. If not setup correctly, your day-to-day measurements won't line up.
A lesser-known but equally important factor affecting RTK performance is the type of correction messages your system is receiving. RTK corrections are sent from a base station to the rover, and the efficiency, accuracy, and reliability of these transmissions play a critical role in your overall performance. However, it requires radio communication, which usually is power-hungry and costly, e.g. when using the 4G network. Hence, today RTK is not much exploited in low power energy-efficient devices. In this work, we present a novel sub-meter precision RTK-base system that also achieves the requirements of low power and energy efficiency.
It sends the RTK corrections via Sik radio link directly the to vehicle's RTK GPS, rather than thru Mission Planner and is very portable. With one exception, it allows one to setup an RTK Fixed Baseline station and have it update the vehicle's GPS with RTCM corrections without having to use a PC running Mission Planner at the field.
Due to those drawbacks, RTK is not much exploited in the localization of battery-operated devices. This work combines RTK with low-power long-range communication to achieve sub-meter precision in an energy-efficient RTK-based system.
