Understanding lighting systems is crucial for maximising energy savings in buildings. This paper examines two strategies for saving energy: introducing automatic dimming lighting systems and improving lamp efficiency. Automatic dimming systems adjust the lighting level to the amount of natural light available.
A system comprising an ambient light sensor, microcontroller, power supply module, dimming controller, and lamp was developed. The sensors measure brightness within a specified range in real time, and the microcontroller analyzes and compares this data against the brightness settings for specific areas.
Furthermore, the integration of renewable energy sources, such as solar photovoltaic panels, in conjunction with advanced energy storage solutions represents a promising way to improve energy consumption and promote the sustainability of buildings. Understanding lighting systems is crucial for maximising energy savings in buildings.
According to research, among lighting systems, public lighting systems (PLSs) have significant potential for such energy projects. It can be realized through smart dimming, installing light-emitting diode (LED) luminaries, using renewable energy, etc.
Specifically, the system provides a payback through energy cost savings with a 75.65% reduction in energy consumption compared to conventional lamps. This significant reduction in energy consumption demonstrates that the system is capable of delivering substantial operational cost savings over its lifetime.
The use of such a reliable solar energy-driven lighting system, with maximum time when the light is “on”, will eliminate the sudden-death of light problem present in conventional photovoltaic (PV) outdoor lights and, therefore, will enhance the natural surveillance and feeling of safety in sustainable buildings and cities.
