Egypt needs more drinkable water – how windy coastal
How could wind power help? Our research built a model of a new wind-powered reverse osmosis desalination system.
Egypt has outstanding wind energy conditions, particularly in the coastal regions where high and stable wind speeds are frequent, with an average of up to 10.5 m/s in the Gulf of Suez. The country's large deserts and abundant thinly populated areas are well suited for the construction of large wind farms.
In addition, as the fuel from wind electrical power production is free, exploitation of offshore wind could positively contribute to the country's Gross domestic product (GDP) and budgets balances, reducing dependence on imported fuels whilst providing a cleaner and more sustainable approach to electricity production in Egypt.
The average hourly wind speed in Cairo is more than 9.0 miles per hour during 4.5 months of the year, from March 7 to July 25. The windiest month in Cairo is June, with an average hourly wind speed of 10.0 miles per hour.
The prevailing wind direction in Cairo is from the north for 9.8 months, from February 23 to December 18, with a peak percentage of 86% on August 28. For 2.2 months, from December 18 to February 23, the wind is most often from the west, with a peak percentage of 35% on January 1.
The Egyptian Supreme Council of Energy approved a plan to build 7 200 MW of wind capacity in 2020, installed at a rate of 600 MW per year. The private sector is targeted to play a key role in achieving this goal.
Three locations – Sidi Barrani, Mersa Matruh and El Dabaa – have been founded to install wind turbines. The atlas further indicates that large regions of the eastern and western deserts of the Nile River and parts of Sinai are suitable for wind turbine installation, as they are much higher than hitherto assumed.
