JAKARTA, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia's state-owned electricity company PT PLN and its subsidiaries have collaborated with the Indonesia Battery Corporation (IBC) to build a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 5 Megawatts (MW) this year.
To accelerate energy storage deployment in the Indonesian power system, key actions are needed to address existing opportunities and challenges, including: Tapping into the limited but existing opportunities for deploying energy storage systems (ESS) is vital for expanding their role in Indonesiaʼs power sector.
Indonesia's electricity system can be powered predominantly by solar PV, complemented by geothermal and hydroelectric power. Off-river pumped hydro energy storage is identified as a major asset for balancing high solar energy penetration.
Conclusion This study demonstrates the critical role of ESS in supporting Indonesia's power sector decarbonization, with a focus on the Java-China system. Using a MIQP-based unit commitment model, the analysis shows that ESS enhances renewable energy integration, reduces curtailment, lowers system costs, and supports emissions reductions.
Enhancing the economics of energy storage projects can be achieved by adjusting electricity tariffs for ESS assets, providing incentives to installers, and clearly outlining the roles of energy storage in the power system to enable value-stacking.
