Technical specifications for solar PV installations
1. Introduction The purpose of this guideline is to provide service providers, municipalities, and interested parties with minimum technical specifications and performance
This work reviewed solar PV potential in Africa for three generational time-scales: present, near future and far future. For the present, the potential of wide scale rooftop solar PV systems was reviewed, particularly in African cities.
Scaling up application of rooftop solar PV in Africa still faces multi-faceted challenges as detailed earlier in the PESTLE analyses. African cities are not lacking solar resources but suffer from the deficit of technological capacity along with the limited financial and regulatory supports to utilise these.
Africa has significant potential to become a leader in solar power generation and solar PV manufacturing. However, the continent faces several challenges, including market concentration, technological limitations, and financial constraints.
Table 5. List of recommendations for solar PV systems in Africa based on the reviewed literature. Affordability of rooftop solar PV should be increased through government incentives such as appropriate FiT, subsidies, tax relief, public–private partnership, grants, loans (low/zero-interest), and community loan sharing programmes.
Africa's natural resource endowments present a unique opportunity for the continent to enter the global solar PV value chain. Key minerals required for solar PV production—such as copper, tin, and silicon—are found in significant quantities in several African countries.
The production of solar PV cells, modules, and other components requires advanced manufacturing processes, skilled labor, and well-developed infrastructure. Unfortunately, many African countries lack the necessary industrial base to support solar PV manufacturing.
