Solar Energy and Battery Energy Storage Systems in South African
George George Idowu South Africa''s agriculture and agri-processing sectors face increasing financial challenges due to rising electricity tariffs, which affect energy-intensive
If Africa is to sustain its growth in renewable energy and create benefits for its population, implementing storage solutions becomes an imperative. Robust investment in storage will help to integrate different forms of energy into the grid seamlessly, thus promoting stable and uninterrupted power supply.
As shown in Figure 8, PHES is the second most studied storage technology. Africa currently has 3.4 GW of PHES, mainly in South Africa and 465 MW in Morocco. 142 Stocks et al. 143 estimate the global PHES potential based on the target of 20 GWh per million people that purportedly would be required to support a 100% RE system.
Each system can contribute uniquely to Africa's diverse energy storage needs. Africa's potential for local battery manufacturing is substantial due to its natural resource wealth and available labour force. The continent is rich in minerals such as lithium, cobalt, and graphite, essential components for battery production.
Despite Africa being the continent suffering from the lowest rates of electricity access, there is no single energy system model that can coherently model the transition of on-grid and off-grid solutions in a comprehensive energy system transition.
So far, most of the investments are concentrated in Morocco and Egypt. Contrary to the global trend in the period of 2013-2020 which shows private sector financing as the primary source of funding for renewables development, North Africa sees public finance play a far more important role.
To address this gap, Africa needs increased technology transfer, particularly in the fields of battery production and storage systems. With abundant reserves of critical minerals like lithium and cobalt, the continent has the potential to become a key player in the global battery storage market.
