The 70 MW/140 MWh BESS project will be located in Nivala, northern Finland.
SEB Nordic Energy's portfolio company, Locus Energy, in collaboration with Ingrid Capacity, will build the largest battery energy storage project in the Nordics. The project will add 70 MW/140 MWh of storage capacity to SEB Nordic Energy's Finnish portfolio, which already includes wind and hydropower.
This study reviews the status and prospects for energy storage activities in Finland. The adequacy of the reserve market products and balancing capacity in the Finnish energy system are also studied and discussed. The review shows that in recent years, there has been a notable increase in the deployment of energy storage solutions.
After the start of commercial operations in 2026, the project will contribute an important balancing function to the Finnish grid, supporting the Finnish renewable energy expansion. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in the afternoon on Monday the 26th of May on the site near Nivala where the battery energy storage system will be built.
